Chapter 1: Celtic and Roman Britain, Anglo-Saxon Britain, Norman England.

Literary background: Anglo-Saxon poetry, Ministrels, Beowulf con analisi del testo Beowulf’s funeral; Ballads: Lord Randal, Geordie con analisi del testo interpretati da cantanti pop, dalla ballata ai testi delle canzone pop moderna; Geoffrey Chaucher (Canterbury Tales e analisi dei testi: The General Prologue, the Wife of Bath).

Chapter 2: the Tudors, Elizabethan England, a changing world, the Stuart dynasty.

Literary Background: sonnets, the golden age of drama, Elizabethan playwrights; 

Christopher Marlowe (Doctor Faustus’ Death);

William Shakespeare. Analisi dei brani tratti da Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet. Sonnets (Sonnet 18 and sonnet 130)

Approfondimenti: Magna Carta and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Queen Elisabeth I: the Spanish Armada Speech (brano The heart of a King); Shakespeare’s sister (V.Woolf’s essay), the Globe theatre, The Elizabethan playhouse
