1. Reading of "The wizard of Oz" , reviews, historical background,  the great Depression and the American environmental problem during the crisis, American writers in front of the economic crisis, tips about musicals and literature of the Thirties,  anticipations on the F.D.Roosevelt government and  on the politics of the New Deal. (Oral summary and written exercises)

2. Some history highlights: Empires in India. Coalition wars and Napoleonic Empire. How to use satire in literature, pop culture and politics. Robert Owen and the Industrial revolution. Texts and videos on Dickensian atmosphere. The Victorian age: inland policy (Chartism, trade union act, Reform bills, social achievements) and foreign policy (imperialism). Timeline about Arab spring and Jasmine revolution.  Authority and totalitarian governments. Characteristics of totalitarianism. Xi Jinping's quest to dominate China. (Discussion)
